MND ( Motor Neuron Disorder) treatment in ayurveda

What Is MND ( Motor Neuron Disorder) And How It Can Be Treated In Ayurveda

Motor neuron disease (MND) causes damage to motor nerves, leading to their eventual dysfunction. This results in a gradual weakening of the muscles supplied by these damaged nerves. Motor Neurone Disease comprises several subtypes, each with distinct initial symptoms.

However, as the disease advances, the symptoms among these subtypes tend to converge. While MND is rare and typically impacts individuals in their 60s and 70s, it can also affect adults across all age groups. Consequently, the symptoms in the later stages of each MND subtype become more alike.

In this article, we'll read how Ayurveda, a traditional healing system, can play a role in managing MND. We’ll also learn about Deep Ayurveda’s Motor Neuron Disease (MND) ayurvedic treatment for overall health using natural methods. It can help improve muscle strength, reduce inflammation, and make the person feel better overall.

Types of Motor Neuron Disease

Motor Neuron Disease can be classified into four primary types:

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) -

ALS is the most common type of the disease, affecting both upper and lower motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Individuals with ALS experience a loss of control over muscles used for walking, talking, chewing, swallowing, and breathing. Gradually, these muscles weaken, leading to stiffness and twisting. Motor Neurone Disease symptoms include muscle swelling in the hands and feet, difficulties in walking, speaking, and breathing, as well as emotional changes.

Progressive Bulbar Palsy (PBP) -

PBP targets motor neurons in the brainstem, located at the base of the brain. This part connects the brain to the spinal cord and cerebellum. PBP often develops alongside ALS and affects motor neurons required for chewing, swallowing, and speaking. Symptoms include repeated choking, speaking difficulties, eating challenges, and swallowing issues.

Progressive Muscular Atrophy (PMA) -

PMA is less common than ALS or PBP, impacting lower motor neurons in the spinal cord. It results in gradual muscle wasting, primarily affecting the arms, legs, and mouth. The disease progresses slowly, usually starting with weakness in the hands before spreading to other body parts. PMA can be inherited and presents symptoms like muscle cramps, tremors, rapid weight loss, and sudden loss of muscle function.

Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS) –

PLS is a rare neuromuscular disorder affecting central motor neurons. It progresses slower than ALS and, while not fatal, significantly impacts quality of life. Symptoms include weakness and stiffness in the hands and feet, slow movements, and poor coordination and balance. It particularly affects leg muscles, leading to stiffness and weakness over time.

Causes For Motor Neuron Disease

The causes of motor neuron disease can include:

  • Stress (physical and mental)
  • Toxin buildup in tissues
  • Poor diet
  • Nervous system imbalance/deterioration
  • Vata imbalance (according to Ayurveda)
  • Weakened immune response
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Environmental factors
  • Viral infections/autoimmune reactions
  • Aging
  • Traumatic injuries
  • Neurotoxic medications/treatments
  • Chronic inflammation/autoimmune disorders
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Unhealthy lifestyle habits
  • Chronic illnesses/conditions

Symptoms  for motor neuron disease

  • Muscle weakness and wasting, lead to movement difficulties.
  • Muscle cramps, spasms, and fasciculations (rippling sensations).
  • Stiff joints, limit the range of motion.
  • Pain or discomfort due to other symptoms.
  • Speech and communication issues affecting expression.
  • Swallowing difficulties impacting eating and drinking.
  • Saliva problems like pooling or thickening.
  • Weakened cough reflex, making throat-clearing harder.
  • Breathing problems cause breathlessness and fatigue.
  • Emotional changes such as inappropriate responses.

Ayurveda’s Perspective on Motor Neuron Diseases

According to Ayurveda, Motor Neuron Diseases are a combination of Vata Roga and Kshaya Roga. Ayurvedic theory suggests that Motor Neuron Diseases are primarily Vata-related, stemming from an imbalance in the Vata dosha. Vata governs various bodily systems such as respiration, circulation, excretion, reproduction, and cognitive functions, including the secretion of neurotransmitters and hormones. When Vata is disturbed by factors like Pitta or Kapha doshas, or by imbalances in dhatus (tissues) or Malas (waste products), it leads to the manifestation of the disease. This disturbance in Vata's sensory and motor functions can result in reduced activity, weakness, and spasms, especially when Vata becomes aggravated by Kapha dosha

Vata-related diseases in Ayurveda contains a range of neurological conditions, including inflammatory, degenerative, obstructive, and functional disorders. Ayurveda views Motor Neuron Diseases as challenging to cure completely, classifying them under the category of Kashta Saadhya yoga (difficult to cure).
