What is Asthma?
Asthma is called Swas Rog in Ayurveda, meaning a breathing problem caused by inflammation and mucus in the airways. Early signs include indigestion, constipation, and chest tightness. As it worsens, sneezing and wheezing occur.
An imbalance of the doshas is associated with asthma: Vata produces dryness and difficulty breathing, while Kapha produces excess mucus. Ayurveda aims to balance these doshas to improve breathing and overall health.
Main Root Causes of Asthma

Imbalance in Doshas
Primarily excess Kapha (mucus) and Vata (dryness) disrupt airflow

Smoking
Smoking destroys the lining of the airways and leads to asthma

Poor Digestion
Weak digestion (Agni) can lead to the formation of toxins (Ama), which block the airways.

Environmental Factors
Exposure to allergens like dust, smoke, and pollution can trigger asthma.

Emotional Stress
Anxiety and stress disturb the balance of doshas, affecting the respiratory system.

Dietary Imbalances
Eating heavy, cold, or incompatible foods can increase mucus production and aggravate asthma.

Most Common Symptoms of Asthma
- Shortness of breath
- Wheezing (whistling sound while breathing)
- Coughing (especially at night or early morning)
- Chest tightness
- Difficulty exhaling

Common Solutions for Asthma
- Albuterol (Ventolin, ProAir): A quick-relief inhaler for immediate relief.
- Fluticasone (Flovent): Inhaled steroid to reduce inflammation.
- Salmetrol (Serevent): Long-acting bronchodilator to help keep airways open.
- Montelukast (Singulair): Oral medication to reduce allergy-related asthma symptoms.
- Prednisone: Oral steroid for severe asthma flare-ups.
Adverse Effects of These Above Solutions

Increased heart rate or palpitations

Shakiness or trembling

Severe Headaches

Sore throat or mouth irritation

Mood changes (irritability or depression)
Ayurveda: A Holistic Approach to Managing Asthma
Balancing Doshas:The main cause of asthma is an imbalance between Vata (dryness and difficulty breathing) and Kapha (mucus and congestion). Ayurvedic treatments aim to restore harmony by using herbs, diet, and lifestyle adjustments.

Herbal Remedies:
- Tulsi (Holy Basil): Known for its anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator properties.
- Vasa: A powerful herb used to clear mucus from the respiratory system.
- Pippali (Long Pepper): Helps improve lung function and reduce inflammation.
Dietary Changes:
- Warm, light foods: Avoid heavy, cold, or oily foods that can aggravate mucus.
- Spices: Ginger, garlic, and turmeric help reduce inflammation and clear airways.

Panchakarma
A detoxification process that removes toxins (Ama) from the body, which can contribute to asthma symptoms.

Breathing Exercises
Practices likeAnulom Vilom(alternate nostril breathing) andKapalbhati(forced breathing) help strengthen the lungs and improve air circulation.

Lifestyle Modifications
- Regular exercise: Gentle activities like yoga and walking can improve lung capacity.
- Stress management: Relaxation methods and meditation help lower anxiety, which can lead to asthma attacks.
